2010 Year End Charitable Gifting Opportunities

With the tax year quickly coming to a close many parishioners inquire about year- end charitable gifting opportunities for St. Thomas the Apostle.

In addition to contributing to the general fund which supports all ministries of the Parish, there are opportunities to specifically designate your gift to any of the following areas of need:

1. Parish Maintenance Fund — Provides for upkeep, maintenance and support of parish facilities including church improvements. This is a timely need as the church is currently undergoing some renovation.
2. School Technology Fund — This fund supports specific technology needs of the school. We keep this fund to ensure that the technology that our children use is up to date.
3. School Building Fund — This fund is for future building improvements for the school.
4. Parish Endowment — The parish maintains an endowment with the Catholic Community Foundation to support the long term financial needs of the entire parish.
5. School Endowment — The parish also maintains a school endowment which provides for long term funding needs of the ministry of the school.

There are many different charitable gifting options available that could offer potential tax benefits:

Straight Gift

A direct donation of cash or marketable securities (stocks or bonds). This could include securities with appreciated value. These gifts can be designated for specific projects or items as well.

IRA Charitable Gift (Regular, Roth or Rollover)

If you, or someone you know is 70 ½ or older, they can make a charitable gift directly to St. Thomas the Apostle from their IRA, TAX FREE. You can take advantage of this opportunity if:

1. The donor is 70 ½ or older.
2. The gift is not more than $100,000 per year, per donor.
3. The gift is made before 12/31/2010.
4. The funds are transferred directly from your IRA, Rollover IRA or Roth IRA.
5. The donation is made to a public charity such as St. Thomas the Apostle.
